CAD/CREO/VR Artist Developer
Summary
Title:CAD/CREO/VR Artist Developer
ID:RUAA - 100
Department:Information Technology
Location:Wall Township, NJ
Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will have until December of this year (Dec 2024) to build a prototype GUI (drag and drop) application which converts CAD/CREO export files (.STL) to formats usable within VR (.FBX, .OBJ, .USD.).
  • The candidate will use Envision equipment to perform the work using CAD/CREO, Adobe Substance, Unity, or any other software required to create the conversion GUI application.

Requirements:

The contractor shall provide a methodology and supporting software to address the challenge of transforming intricate Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and simulation models from CREO into Virtual Reality (VR) compatible formats. The strategy involves developing a streamlined conversion pipeline, utilizing procedural algorithms to simplify highly detailed CREO models while maintaining essential details. This process is facilitated through a user-friendly Graphic User Interface (GUI), ensuring accessibility for users with varying levels of expertise. This will be done through the following steps: reducing model complexity, file format conversion, and PBR material application detailed below.

  • Reducing Model Complexity: There is a direct need to optimize the complexity of CAD and simulation models during their conversion from CREO to VR-compatible formats. This stems from the understanding that highly detailed CREO models may present challenges in real-time VR environments due to their intricate structures. To address this, a conversion pipeline is employed that leverages procedural algorithms to reduce the amount of manual work needed. These algorithms intelligently simplify the intricate geometry of CREO models while ensuring the preservation of vital details essential for accurate representation and analysis. The goal is to significantly reduce the polygon count and intricacies of the model without compromising its integrity or accuracy. This comprehensive approach contributes to an enhanced design workflow, facilitating more efficient and immersive experiences within virtual environments.
  • GUI for File Format Conversion: Within the pipeline, a GUI will allow for a drag-and-drop approach to simplify the process. Files created and exported using CREO must be converted from .stl files into VR-acceptable formats such as .fbx, .obj, and .usd. The GUI will allow users to select their CREO files and desired output format. Leveraging the team’s experience in 3D graphic software, the converted file will be in a format that will be acceptable for VR or further manipulation in programs such as Blender, Maya, and 3DSMax.
  • Graphics: The integration of material-based applications like Substance Painter and Designer will enhance visual quality inside the VR environment. A custom plugin will facilitate a seamless transition, allowing users to select appropriate materials and textures.
    • Physics-Based Rendering (PBR): enables users to provide realistic lighting, reflection, and shading properties while remaining efficient for use in VR.
    • Lighting: enables user to control types of lighting (point lights, spotlights, areas light, sunlights, etc.), lighting color intensity/temperature, and High Dynamic Range Images (HDRIs).
    • Camera Settings: control depth of field to direct attention to specific objects and create natural bluring effects and influence perspectives and viewing angles.
    • Environment: enables users to add realistic images or color for background to include HDRIs for forest, desert, artic, and urban environments.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements/Certifications:

  • 5 years of experience working with complex models in CAD/CREO software.
  • 5 years of experience working with 3D VR assets (.FBX, .OBJ, .USD file formats).
  • Any experience working with 3D asset conversion.

Preferred Qualification/Requirements:

  • 10 years of experience working with complex models in CAD/CREO software.
  • 10 years of experience working with 3D VR assets (.FBX, .OBJ, .USD file formats).
  • 5 years of experience working with 3D asset conversion.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors degree in 3D Art related field

Substitution for Education:

  • Any certifications in CAD/CREO or 3D Art will suffice pending interview assessment of skills.
